Know Before You Go
- We stayed at the Fall Creek Falls campground for this entire week. It was fantastic, and it has full hookups, which is rare for a state park. They also have a lodge and cabin options if you do not prefer to camp. All reservations can be made here- Fall Creek Falls Lodging.
- Most of the trails are rocky and slick. Proper footwear is recommended.
- Most trails near ledges at least once; use caution, especially if you have little ones running ahead.
- For the most impressive waterfalls, consider a spring visit.
- CUMMINS FALLS Gorge requires a permit and is fair-weather only. You will have to wade through waist-deep water. It is not recommended (by the park) for children under 5. And if you plan to swim at the base of the falls, a life jacket is required for those 12 and under. If you are not feeling quite this adventurous, take the easy trail to the overlook instead! Secure your permit here- Cummins Falls.
- The Great Falls Dam and Powerhouse at ROCK ISLAND are prone to irregular water releases. This will cause trail closures downstream, with water levels quickly rising during a discharge. Please check the TVA’s discharge schedule before visiting. If you hear sirens while hiking, be prepared to move to higher ground immediately.
- If you click on any park name throughout the itinerary, you will be taken to a park-specific post with more information on lodging, dining, cell service, and trail tips for that park.
- Bears are active throughout the park. Review wildlife safety before heading out.
- As always, please follow Leave No Trace principles.
